Cinderella Masks & a Tropical Storm

Spent the last two days getting ready for and dealing with Tropical Storm Fay.

Now that Bean is old enough to get the big picture of what a storm/hurricane is we had to handle things a bit differently when preparing for or talking about the expected weather. She has been intrigued with Hurricanes for the past two weeks since we picked up a booklet at Publix that gives you a list of things you need to prepare. She wanted to know what makes a hurricane and if the weather map showing the projected path was a computer or a real photo.

We made our time stuck inside a fun one by having a "weather party". We made pizza and cookies. (What is a weather party without comfort food?) We had a mock photo shoot. Cleaned the playroom and then, Bean wanted to do an art project. So, we made a few characters on Popsicle sticks - Cinderella, Evil Step-Mother, Step Sisters (the two in drag), Prince, Fairy Godmother, Mice and Birds and put on a show for Mama and the dogs. I really had a blast doing this. Bean was so into cutting the paper. She was sure to tell me that boys don't have red lips, only girls. I said that some boys do wear lipstick. She insisted that the prince did not so I had to color over them...black. A goth prince.

The Mighty Brand Gap

No, I am not talking about The Gap, that boring (and dying) clothing brand. Never liked them much. What I do like and what I am talking about is Marty Neumeier's THE BRAND GAP. Yes, this originally came out in 2006. But, I still love this book. This is a MUST read for all creatives, executives, entrepreneurs, PR specialist, middle men, educators, marketing and advertising folks - anyone who works for the betterment of any company or anyone who is skeptical about the value of design.

As a creative, the hardest challenge I face is getting clients (especially the corporate clients) to understand what branding truly is. No, it is not a logo or when you print your logo on a pen or repeatedly using the same stock image since 1992. THE BRAND GAP clearly articulates what a brand is and what makes a brand unique, all in a short but powerful read. I also have Marty's other books, ZAG and The Dictionary of Brand. I review these books often, especially when presentation time is coming up. Check out Neutron, which was founded by Marty to learn more about his books, workshops, training and how to bring everyone together in the process of building a unique yet relevant brand. Also, Marty has a new book coming out the end of this year called The Designful Company. I can't wait to get my doodling paws on that one.

Kudos to Dooce!

Go Dooce! One smart lady that keeps it real. I (along with 850,000 readers) love that about her. Check out what the NY Times says about Dooce. Thanks to Summer.

Boogers: to Pick or Not to Pick?

I caught Bean digging for gold. I asked her to please stop picking her nose. Her response you ask? "I pick my nose and I eat it!" Ok, gross. Now, a lot of kids go through this booger harvesting thing. I can manage through this awkward phase by asking her to use a tissue, or by tossing her a wipe into the back seat or just ignoring it. What I can't handle was the sense of pride in her reveal. Any suggestions on getting through this phase? How would you handle a boogie picking (or eating) situation at the grocery store? At a wedding? In line at Target with a box of tissues?

Diabetes Through the Eyes of Children

Find more videos like this on Tu Diabetes - A Community for People Touched by Diabetes

My very dear friends at The Diabetes Hand Foundation and Tu Diabetes posted this "Drawing Diabetes: Diabetes Through the Eyes of Children" video. The video features artwork that was created by children and tells the story of how does diabetes affects their lives. Kudos to my pals Manny Hernandez and Andreina Davila at DHF for raising awareness and creating togetherness in a positive environment for people (and their families) living with diabetes.

Right Brain Terrain's Real Emoticon

You know those silly little clip art icons of smiley faces, sad faces, angry faces and such that are used in instant messenger applications or on Myspace? Well, they will soon be no more as Right Brain Terrain has started something that is bound to be contagious, Real Emoticon. RBT is using real people to make animated emoticons and you can make your very own too. If you send in your photos to RBT they will include a link from your animated image to your url. I lent my real face to make some awkward but mostly silly emoticons and Bean made a great fish face. Though I should have worn make-up that day for my iconic debut (insert girlie sigh here), I had a blast taking silly photos with the family.

These are my favorite sneakers. I got as a going away gift from my co-workers at Full Sail's in-house creative department last year. I wear them a lot.
